Learn How to Make Holograms in One Day

Yes, you could be making your own holograms, even full-color holograms, in one day! This Instagram post shares the basics of where to start your hologram journey. The journey starts with…

The LitiHolo kits are a perfect way to get started learning how to make your own holograms, and they build a steady progression to allow you to gain confidence and make sure things are performing at each step.

The standard Hologram Kit has everything to get you up and running with a basic holography “lab in a box”! This will get you started making “transmission holograms,” which are created and viewed with laser light (included in the kit). We start here because these holograms are the most robust and easy to make (larger fringe spacing for the captured interference pattern, if you want to get into the nitty gritty!). Not only that, but the crispness and clarity of laser holograms is incredible, and a great way to start your hologram understanding off with a great “Wow!” moment.

From here, and with the basics of holography under your belt, you’ll want to move quickly to the Reflection Hologram Upgrade Kit. “Reflection holograms” are the ones you can see with white light like sunlight or even a smartphone flashlight, etc. The fringe spacing for these holograms is more narrow, so it’s nice to make sure everything is working well with the basic kit first, but reflection holograms do allow more flexibility for viewing your holograms and showing off your artistic/holographic/laser/”yes, I’m doing Nobel-Prize-winning physics!” skills.

Your next step, with the confidence of smaller transmission and reflection holograms, is to go bigger! The 4″x5″ Hologram Upgrade Kit and the 6″x8″ Hologram Upgrade Kit will supplement your ever-growing knowledge of holograms, help satisfy your thirst for more holograms, and work seamlessly together with your regular kit to make bigger holograms. Here, like before, we’re building up your capabilities with success at each stage of hologram-making, but the reward is sweet (and bigger)! Both of these upgrades allow for both transmission and reflection holograms at the given size.

Now, the “coup de grĂ¢ce,” where you’ve worked your way up to full-color holograms with… you guessed it… the Full-Color Hologram Kit! Now if you’ve been tracking all along, you’ve also guessed this… they are more complex than the single-color holograms. But now you’ve got hologram swagger, and you’re ready to do more. That means 3 lasers (full-color requires color mixing of red, green, and blue lasers) to capture holograms, but don’t worry, we’ve got everything laid out for you with step-by-step details and a clear path to full-color hologram success. Short of going to grad school in optics or spending a small fortune from a large corporate research budget, there is nowhere else you can get full-color hologram-making capabilities like this! The lasers alone will cost you several $1000’s each, and other cheaper lasers are hit and miss as to whether they are holographic quality (mostly miss). Instead, for only $100’s, you could be making color holograms with our LitiHolo system and have everything ready and proven for doing what you really want… making holograms!

We could go on with next steps in your hologram journey (3D Hologram Printer, anyone?), but we’ll stop here for now. Now go forth with your new-found hologram knowledge, and make more holograms!
